ABOUT CORROBOREE - CHINA TOUR 2002
Corroboree was first performed in Australia
in 2001. A rich visual feast and a return to a purity of dance
and tradition, Stephen Page's triple bill embraces the Dreamtime,
a time when animal spirits occupied the land without the influence
of humans. Corroboree takes a journey through the songlines
of three dreamings that are central to the lives of Indigenous
people; Brolga, Roo and Turtle.
Roo depicts the stalking of prey amongst
the harsh 4WD headlights, expressing the very essence of time
and fear. Turtle features the creative cultural input and
additional composition of Bangarra dancer Peggy Misi, and relates
to the sand, the sea and the waters of the Torres Strait, recalling
the everyday turbulence of birth and death, life and struggle.
Brolga centres around the ritualistic cleansing of the
spirit during the wet season and the meeting and feeding grounds
of Arnhem Land.
Corroboree will take you back
to the very core of the Indigenous belief system. Quietly political
and evocative, Corroboree strives to bring attention
to the origins of life.
