A message from Lissa Twomey, Executive Director

I joined Bangarra on the day theatres closed across the nation in March 2020. As we cancelled performances, tours, and other ambitious initiatives, we knew we had to protect Bangarra. The support we received from our donors was vital in sustaining us and positioning our return to the work we do on and off the stage. However, significant challenges still remain ahead as we continue to operate in an environment of ongoing uncertainty.

Whilst its performances on the nation’s mainstages are unparalleled anywhere in the world, it is the work off-stage that sets the company apart – our work in promoting understanding and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures, changing the lives of Indigenous youth and developing and nurturing First Nations leaders of the future.

After 10 months off the stage, our return was at the Sydney Festival in January, followed by a NSW regional tour. Our documentary film, Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra opened in cinemas across the nation and is now reaching international audiences. Whilst our Education and Youth teams continued their work online throughout 2020, they are very pleased to be back on the road again delivering Rekindling, our flagship youth outreach program, to communities around the country.

We look forward to the world premiere of our new work SandSong: Stories from the Great Sandy Desert on 10 June at the Sydney Opera House, to be followed by a national tour, borders permitting.

Over the next few weeks, you will find video stories in your inbox from behind-the-scenes at Bangarra, inviting you to share in our journey of connection with community, culture and creativity. Watch the first instalment below.

We are very grateful for your support of Bangarra and the work that we do, whether that be by subscribing to Songlines or buying tickets to a Bangarra performance. We rely on the ongoing generosity of our donors to tell the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in moving and unique ways.

If you are in a position to do so, we kindly ask you to support us by making a tax-deductible end of financial year donation.

With kind regards,

Lissa Twomey, Executive Director

“When I’m asked why I joined Bangarra, the answer is simple - Bangarra is so much more than just a dance company.”
