Stephen Brady

Biography:

Stephen Brady has had a distinguished career of over 36 years with the Commonwealth Government, where he held a number of senior diplomatic posts including as Australia’s Ambassador to France, also accredited to Monaco, Morocco & Algeria. Before this Stephen was Official-Secretary to the Governor-General. He has  also served as Australian Ambassador to The Netherlands and Australia’s representative to international legal bodies including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. His first appointment as Ambassador was to Sweden where he was also accredited to Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. On two occasions he was Senior Adviser on Government to the Prime Minister. 

 

In his role as Ambassador, Stephen has always been a strong proponent of cultural diplomacy as a means of building and strengthening inter-cultural connection, raising Australia’s profile and telling our story on the international stage.  

 

Stephen currently serves on the boards of the Ethics Centre and the National Gallery of Australia and is on the European-Australian Business Council. He presents on international issues to corporate Australia. 

 

He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2015 for distinguished service to successive Australian Governments and to international relations through senior diplomatic roles, including the fostering of security, economic and cultural initiatives.  He was made a Commander of the Victorian Order by The Queen in 2011 and in 2017 the French Government made him Commander of the Légion d’Honneur. Stephen joined the Bangarra Board in February 2019.
