True Stories a knockout in Melbourne!

True Stories

Bangarra thrilled audiences with the world premiere of True Stories in Melbourne this May! Emeret Lu and X300 proved to be a powerful dance combination in both Melbourne and Brisbane, with the music and sets resounding in audiences minds.

Here's what the critics had to say:

"...Emeret Lu is a knockout" MX

"This is compelling, enriching dance that takes us all to a deeper place and a stronger connection" Herald Sun

"Bangarra Dance Theatre is now a mature, distinctive, contemporary dance ensemble with a sophisticated sense of theatricality and a unique repertoire" The Age

"They make it look so effortless, so beautiful. Gripping and lifting each other with a seemingly featherlight touch, the men and women of Bangarra Dance Theatre flow and whip around, above and below each other" The Age

"Rings creates striking image after striking image..." The Australian

"True Stories shows precisely why Bangarra Dance Theatre is consistently the most challenging of the country's dance companies" The Australian

True Stories was the talk of the town when it opened in Brisbane this June. Opening night was a wild success with many of the dancers' families in the audience.

"Bangarra has soul" Daily Mail

"In David Page's brilliant score, sounds have become menacing punctuation, and archival audio recordings chilling" Daily Mail

"As a combination of sound, movement and narrative content, Bangarra's production of True Stories comes close to perfection" stagediary.com

Watch out for the brand new True Stories television commercial on SBS airing in July!!

New dancer in '07!

Daniel Riley McKinley

Daniel, a descendant of the Wiradjuri people from the Wellington in Western New South Wales, began dancing at the age of nine.

In 1998 Daniel moved to Canberra to perform with Quantum Leap, an initiative of The Australian Choreographic Centre, where he worked with choreographers such as Ruth Osborne, Solon Ulbrich, Paul Zivkovich, Rowan Marchingo, Vivienne Rogis, Darren Green and Zoe Ventoura. Whilst in Canberra Daniel was also an inaugural member of Cadi McCarthy and Company Members, performing in Awkward and Restless.

Daniel has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and in 2005 Daniel was the recipient of an Indigenous Australia Council Grant titled Making Tracks. Daniel then spent seven months with Leigh Warren and Dancers in Adelaide, where he performed two brand new works: Like No One Is Watching choreographed by Antony Rizzi and Petroglyphs-Signs of Life choreographed by Leigh Warren in collaboration with Gina Rings. Daniel toured this work with the company to the Indigenous dance festival The Dreaming in Woodford, Queensland.

Daniel joined Bangarra this year, performing in Clan at the Glen Street Theatre and is currently performing True Stories around Australia.

Daniel is inspired by his friends and family.

Victorian Opera presents two powerful productions at Her Majesty's Theatre, Melbourne in July and August.

The Love of the Nightingale is a new opera from Richard Mills, acclaimed composer of the Helpmann Award-winning Batavia. The hit of the recent Perth Festival, it is an explosive drama about the power of words, and the ultimate price of using violence to impose silence, based on the 3000 year old legend of Philomele and Procne.

Orphee et Euryridice will be captivating retelling of one of the world's most immortal love stories - the Greek legend of Orpheus. Ravishing music, beautiful voices and powerful modern dance combine in a sensational new production by Bangarra Dance Theatre's own Stephen Page.

Kin

Malthouse Theatre presents KIN in Melbourne

IT'S WHERE YOU'RE FROM. WHERE YOU BELONG. PASS IT ON.

In 2005, David Page floored Melbourne with Page 8 at Malthouse Theatre, a soul-stirring portrait of a life less ordinary. Now, his brother Stephen picks up the story of his family with Kin, a rocking, hip-hop dance jam, riddled with affecting tales. In this new production, Stephen hands the torch to the next generation: in their words, at an age where they are often spoken for but rarely spoken with. Kin is performed entirely by his young relations, whose slim shoulders bear a world of joy and struggle, pain and faith. These kids are deadly: whether break-dancing, singing or just spinning a yarn, achingly self-conscious or playing the room, they are boys teetering on the edge of adulthood, still wearing the mantle of the child while facing their futures as young Aboriginal men.

Anyone who has known the defiant gaze of a teenager will understand: this mob will prevail.

After its premiere as part of The 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT5) in January, this acclaimed production won the hearts and minds of audiences and critics alike. The Melbourne season is limited to twelve performances during the September School Holidays.
