Rheannan Port - Songlines Star

Rheannan Port:
Bangarra Dancer

A new kind of choreography:
Rheannan takes the plunge

We always enjoy introducing members of the company to our Bangarra friends and this edition's Songlines Star is Rheannan Port.

Rheannan is from the Lama Lama tribe in Northern Queensland and at 25 she is one of the youngest Bangarra dancers. As a graduate of NAISDA Dance College, Rheannan completed her six week secondment program at Bangarra, before being offered a full-time position with the company.

When did you first decide you wanted to be a dancer?
I was in year 12 and I didn't really know what I wanted to do... Then I saw Bangarra perform Ochres in Cairns and I thought this is for me.

Who inspires you in your everyday life?
The senior dancers at Bangarra. They're so supportive... And very patient. I can always go to them for advice and ask them anything... Plus Sidney (Saltner) always brings chocolates to class!

What is one of your best/worst/funniest moments as a performer?
I'm happy to say that nothing embarrassing or bad has happened to me... Yet!

What have you learnt by working with Bangarra?
I know my dance technique has improved. And I've learnt how to work with other people.

What would you like to be doing in ten years time?
I'd like to be an actor - the challenge of moving into something new really appeals to me. But I'd like to continue working with Bangarra over the next couple of years and dance a solo piece.

What challenges have you faced in your life and how did you cope with them?
Moving down to Sydney when I was 17 to join NAISDA. It was difficult leaving my family and getting to grips with busy city life... And dealing with the Sydney transport! The support of close friends helped, especially other North Queenslanders.

What is your favourite way to relax?
Action hero movies! I can't wait to see Cat Woman... I love a strong female character. And when I've got more time, I love going up North to visit my family and just spending time in the bush.

David Page: performing at the Belvoir

For Sydney people
Bangarra composer David Page has collaborated with Louis Nowra and his little brother, Stephen, to bring his extraordinary self-portrait to Belvoir in September. Page 8 is the exuberant and moving story of how, as the eighth child of twelve living in a Mt Gravatt housing commission estate, David became Australia's answer to Michael Jackson.

Little Davy Page was an all-singing, all-dancing sensation; at a tender age he appeared on Countdown and The Paul Hogan Show and his singles twice made it to the Top Ten until his voice broke. Then in his teenage years there were questions of sexuality until finally he became an award-winning composer for such groups as Bangarra, as well as for television and film.
