  Jasmine Gulash - Songlines Star

Jasmine Gulash, Company Manager

One of the great things about our new e-newsletter Songlines is that it gives us the chance to introduce ourselves to all our Bangarra friends and supporters. In this edition our Songlines Star is Jasmine Gulash.

Born in Murwillumbah, northern NSW, Jasmine is a descendant of the Gubbi Gubbi people in south-east Queensland. She first joined Bangarra as a dancer in 1989 when the Company was first formed and is now the Company Manager.

When did you first decide you wanted to be a dancer?
I always thought I would be an actor. Film and theatre were one of my passions when I was young. It wasn't until I saw a rehearsal of NAISDA college in the early 80's that dance became an option as a career.

Who inspires you in your everyday life?
My son Yarron. having a child changes your perception on what is important in life.

What is one of your best/worst/funniest moments as a performer?
Losing what was not much of a costume in the first place, and continuing with a g-string. It was an incredibly humbling experience.

What have you learnt by working with Bangarra?
Through my involvement with Bangarra and other Indigenous companies, I have had the opportunity to experience sacred moments with people and cultures that have strengthened my pride in being a professional Indigenous woman.

What would you like to be doing in ten years time?
I would like to be living and making a difference in my country (SE Queensland - Sunshine coast). Career decisions have kept me distanced from my mothers land. The Sunshine Coast needs some strong cultural and political decisions to be made, and I hope to be part of the revolution in Queensland.

What challenges have you faced in your life and how did you cope with them?
I think living life in general is a challenge whether it be difficult or not. I believe in Karma - 'what you give is what you get'.

What is your favourite way to relax?
It would have to be swimming in the ocean, but good friends, food and wine are not a bad way to let go either.

About THE DREAMERS: Left alone in Paris whilst their parents are on holiday, alluring twins Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrell) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay at their apartment. Here they make their own rules as they experiment with their emotions and sexuality while playing a series of increasingly demanding mind games.

Set against the turbulent political backdrop of France in the spring of 1968 when the voice of youth was reverberating around Europe, The Dreamers is a story of self-discovery as three young students test each other to see just how far they will go.

Exquisite production and costume design and a fantastic soundtrack bring the city and the times alive and The Dreamers sees director Bertolucci return to Paris where his films Last Tango in Paris and The Conformist were filmed.
