Bangarra means 'to make fire' in Wiradjeri language of NSW.
The logo of Bangarra represents a flame; the headdress of
a Torres Strait Island warrior; the point of a spear used
by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island hunters.
Vision
Bangarra Dance Theatre is fuelled by the spirit, energy
and inspiration derived from the culture, values and traditions
of Indigenous Australians. From these roots, we create theatre
that is artistically innovative, technically outstanding
and truly exciting to audiences throughout Australia and
the world.
Mission
To respect and energise the link between Indigenous cultures
of Australia and new forms of contemporary artistic expression
by maintaining the integrity of tradition while exploring
the endless inspiration of dance and, in doing so, create
theatre of excellence that resonates with people everywhere
and speaks with a myriad of voices.
What we are now
Bangarra Dance Theatre is already the most well known Indigenous
company in Australia.
- We are respected for quality throughout Australia and
more and more known by presenters overseas.
- We offer a truly unique experience of Australian culture
- more than any other major performing arts company
in Australia. We acknowledge that our uniqueness comes
from our connection with Indigenous culture.
- Our company has grown dramatically in size, in creative
output, in financial and human resources and in popularity
with audiences over recent history. We are no longer a
small, community based organisation and recognise our
need to take our place with current industry leaders.
- We understand that maintaining the strength of our past
does not mean we do not embrace change.
